How would I know if I am eligible to partake in the New York Road Test?

New York has its own rules for driving tests, which differ from other states. To find out if you are eligible to take the road test in New York, you need to check New York road test requirements for obtaining a driver’s license. You can also contact your local DMV office or visit their website for.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all drivers who wish to obtain their first driver’s license in the state of New York to pass a written knowledge exam and a road test. The road test is administered by an examiner who is employed by the DMV, and applicants must pay a fee before they are allowed to take it. The fee amount is paid along with the fee of obtaining your learner’s permit. This road test fee is valid for up to 2 road tests. If you need to take any more than that there will be a skills fee accompanied by each one.

New York Road Test Requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have held your learner’s permit for at least 6 months ONLY if you are under 18
  • Have taken and passed a written exam on driving laws in New York State, which takes place online through the DMV website. You can find more information about this here: DMV
  • Have participated in a 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course within a year from the scheduled road test date
  • Fill out and present the MV-262 form to your road test examiner on the day of your road test ONLY if you are under 18

The road test is administered by an authorized DMV examiner and will be held at a public parking lot or other open space. The test lasts for 15 minutes and includes a series of maneuvers such as:

  • Parallel parking
  • Turning between two lines
  • Turning right on a curve
  • Turning left on intersections
  • Starting from a stop sign or traffic light
  • K-turn (AKA broken U-turn)
